In 2022, NOCTURNAL DEPARTURE made their presence felt in the international black metal underground with the release of their second album, Clandestine Theurgy, courtesy of new label home HELLS HEADBANGERS. Here, the Canadians delivered a masterclass in late '90s black metal, particularly that found on North American soil during that time: traditional, yes, but with an acidic personality all its own. Raw, desperate violence had been harnessed into a haunting panoply of indeed-clandestine arts. Now, NOCTURNAL DEPARTURE emerge from winter snows with torches ablaze on their third full-length, Spiritual Cessation. This album marks a significant milestone for the band, introducing their first recordings with new members Folterer on guitars and Hexzul on drums. Their addition brings renewed intensity, precision, and depth to the evolving NOCTURNAL DEPARTURE sound, rendered in raw-yet-ringing tones and even-more-haunting atmosphere. From a songwriting standpoint, Spiritual Cessation represents a natural progression—their most focused, dynamic, and professionally realized material to date, all within the remit of proudly ancient BLACK METAL. "From the creation, the record is based on a Luciferian Dark Night Of The Soul. ‘Fires Of The Apocalypse Light My Path’ is the awakening. The first three songs are experiences and dreams that were happening as this change began, and I questioned everything I was doing. It starts feeling as though a new fire has been lit, but it grows dark as we venture into the second act, ‘Servants Of Darkness Guide My Way.’ This is the struggle and torment that comes along with the awakening. The poem recounts the deeds of the king of Uruk, a strong and arrogant demigod who oppresses his people. To Gilgamesh the gods oppose the bestial Enkidu, a wild hero who lives among animals and that defeats the king of Uruk in battle, teaching him temperance and balance. The two become inseparable friends and embark on heroic adventures until Enkidu's death, a tragic event that drives Gilgamesh on a desperate quest for immortality, finally discovering that true immortality lies in the works and wisdom left to posterity. Telling the story are four bands characterized by darkly epic songwriting: first of all, Dis Pater's MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY, who with its cosmic metal has repeatedly tackled concept albums with a mythological flavor; then the english duo SWORDS OF DIS, somewhat the directors of the entire work, whether for the theatrical power of their doom-tinged black metal, and for the fact that singer Alice Corvinus' vocals act as a trait d'union between all the tracks. And finally ÔROS KAÙ, the black metal project of Guillaume Cazalet from NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM, and the Finnish deathsters SERPENT ASCENDING by Jarno Nurmi (DESECRESY), both equally at home with concept albums with dark and majestic atmospheres. Equally important is the amazing work of artist David Glomba, who took care of the cover drawing as well as the magnificent paintings and cuneiform writing that are beautifully displayed in the sumptuous large booklet. Through 5 long and articulate tracks on the border between death, black and doom metal, "From The Waters Of Death" beautifully captures the essence of the Gilgamesh myth, who represents mankind's irrepressible need to understand the meaning of existence through the value of human mortality.
