The songs are called transmissions here and each one has a different identity and purpose, making this an utterly fascinating and unique listening experience. The music is tenuously black metal, with its elements taken apart and pieced together using futuristic components, coalesced using death metal and industrial influences, and of course a wide range of all the weird, extraterrestrial sounds to make this record as convincing and out there as possible. The name of the project is inspired on something they read in the preface of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit: "The life of God and divine cognition may well be spoken of as a disporting of love with itself; but this idea sinks into mere edification, and even insipidity, if it lacks the seriousness, the suffering, the patience, and the labor of the negative." The name of the band's first full-length album, "The Triumph of Time and the Disillusioned," is instead inspired by Händel's piece entitled "The Triumph of Time and Disillusion." With such premises, it is easy to imagine how LABOR OF THE NEGATIVE’s black metal sounds harsh and intellectual, adventurous and creative, dark and illuminating, all at the same time. A philosophical investigation inspired by a wealth of different thinkers like Epicurus, Hegel, Hume, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Durkheim, musically "The Triumph of Time and the Disillusioned" is rooted in the avant-garde black metal of VIRUS, ARCTURUS and DODHEIMSGARD, among the others. For over 25 years now, POWER FROM HELL have been flying the flag for ancient black metal. Led by founding vocalist / guitarist Sodomic, the band's first four albums spanning 2004-2011 established the Brazilians as staunch purveyors of vintage violence, depthless darkness, and straightforward simplicity. In 2015, the band aligned with HELLS HEADBANGERS for the release of Devil's Whorehouse, which brought this sound to a boil while simultaneously expanding their ghostly aura. Thereafter, POWER FROM HELL released two more albums, 2019's Profound Evil Essence and 2022's Shadows Devouring Light, both of which saw a certain maturity and a shedding of older, comparatively archaic skin. Now, more than a decade later, POWER FROM HELL return to HELLS HEADBANGERS for the release of their eighth album. "Returning to HELLS HEADBANGERS feels very special to us, states Sodomic. "HELLS HEADBANGERS has always represented a very important part of the extreme underground, and being back with the label for Primordial Disobedience feels like returning to a place where the music can be presented exactly as it was meant to be." Provocatively titled Primordial Disobedience, indeed does LP8 show POWER FROM HELL in fine, rule-breaking form. Arguably the best's darkest record thus far, Primordial Disobedience surges and slithers in a most serpentine fashion, fusing sooty atmospheres with challenging song constructions, mesmerizingly melodic riffing with sweat-inducing, almost-sexual tension. "With Primordial Disobedience, we wanted to go deeper into the darker side of the human condition and into the idea of disobedience itself," explains Sodomic, "not simply as rebellion against religion, but as something primordial, something rooted in mankind before moral systems, dogmas, and institutions attempted to define what is right and wrong." For sure, this is POWER FROM HELL at the height of their songwriting powers. Those that cried afoul about said "maturity" will only be stunned by the multi-layered sensory explosion the quartet dole out here. That all the colors emanate from a bottomless pit of black makes it all the more magickal: defiant to the end, masterful every step of the way. "The lyrics deal with corruption, religious faith, the destruction of morality, human cruelty, indifference, and the emptiness that lies beneath the structures we create to give meaning to existence," Sodomic continues. "Songs like 'Psalm of Corruption' reflect this perspective, while other tracks explore the darker and more brutal aspects of humanity from different angles. The title Primordial Disobedience represents the core of the whole record, the instinct to reject imposed truths and question the very foundations of morality, faith, and human civilization. Musically and lyrically, we wanted the album to feel dark, hostile, and uncompromising, but also cohesive like different manifestations of the same destructive force." A more perfect summation of Primordial Disobedience one will not find. Still, the record remains amazing given the long, strange trip POWER FROM HELL have been for those 25 years... With Against, RAM takes a more grounded approach, focusing on the experience of being pushed beyond reasonable limits and refusing to comply. The album captures that moment of resistance “that fire of defiance, which ultimately defines its title and message,” as the band collectively states. For the production, RAM reunited with their longtime collaborator Johan Reiven, who had previously worked with the band on "Lightbringer" (2009). Without their own studio – having sold Black Path Studios – the band recorded at Studio Recordia in Varberg, Sweden. “At first, I wasn’t really comfortable not being in my own domain,” admits singer Oscar Carlquist. “But Johan is a far better sound tech than me and he did a wonderful job. We recorded the solos in a cool new way, as we set up two amps, one wet with a lot of effects and one dry with no effects. The name of the project is inspired on something they read in the preface of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit: "The life of God and divine cognition may well be spoken of as a disporting of love with itself; but this idea sinks into mere edification, and even insipidity, if it lacks the seriousness, the suffering, the patience, and the labor of the negative." The name of the band's first full-length album, "The Triumph of Time and the Disillusioned," is instead inspired by Händel's piece entitled "The Triumph of Time and Disillusion." With such premises, it is easy to imagine how LABOR OF THE NEGATIVE’s black metal sounds harsh and intellectual, adventurous and creative, dark and illuminating, all at the same time. A philosophical investigation inspired by a wealth of different thinkers like Epicurus, Hegel, Hume, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Durkheim, musically "The Triumph of Time and the Disillusioned" is rooted in the avant-garde black metal of VIRUS, ARCTURUS and DODHEIMSGARD, among the others. In LABOR OF THE NEGATIVE's hands, the most feral black metal is infiltrated by schizoid and hallucinatory vocals that give a theatrical aura to the whole thing, often echoed by the equally twisted and venomous sounds of a trumpet. The result makes "The Triumph of Time and the Disillusioned" a complex, layered, and one-of-a-kind work.
